Joann and Kai’s special day was just full of surprises, all good ones of course! When they first greeted us in the morning rocking the chinese traditional qipao and changshan for their tea ceremony, I couldn’t help but notice how excited they are for what the day will bring. Since everyone was still busy preparing for the tea ceremony, we stole them away for a few portraits around the house. Right away I noticed how comfortable they are in front of the camera! I think the key is their ability to make each other laugh (future clients take note ^_-), a funny comment here, a silly face there, and even a pat on the butt can go a long way in terms of laughing and smiling naturally in the photos. I’ve photographed a fair share of tea ceremonies, but I have never seen the tradition of walking under the pants. According to Chinese customs, if the younger sibling gets married before the elder sibling, he/she would have to buy a pair of pants for the older sibling, and walk under the pants with his/her future spouse. Afterwards, they shed their chinese costumes, and got ready in their rooms at The Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars. At their gorgeous ceremony overlooking the vineyard and Seneca Lake, they surprised me with how fast they can make each other cry. I was literally holding back tears as I was listening to their vows for each other. During their portraits, we went to a nearby waterfall. Shockingly, it was in someone’s backyard, and the owners were kind enough to let us take some photos there. They also owned two adorable and super friendly golden retrievers that enjoyed a bit of affection from this pet loving couple =]. As the evening wore on, the level of fun and excitement were definitely turned up a few notches with Joann and Kai’s Harlem Shake entrance, and Joann’s dead on impersonation of Michael Jackson (she even was teaching a little girl the thriller dance)!
It was such a privilege to document your awesome wedding Joann and Kai!!! Thank you to the amazing Michelle Khordos for not only keeping me awake on the long drives despite feeling under the weather, but contributing some awesome photos! You rock girl!
